When you touch something – or someone – you get the sense that you are feeling with your fingertips. Or with whatever is doing the touching. But the truth is that the “feeling” takes place in your brain. Pressure on the skin is picked up by neurons, which then transmit this information to the brain. And the brain creates the sensation of feeling back at the skin, at the point of contact.
Studies in mice have confirmed this. Scientists can actually give mice the illusion that they are feeling something by stimulating particular parts of the brain. An experiment in 2019 at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute showed how manipulation of the nerves at the base of a mouse’s whiskers could give the animal the “feeling” that they are feeling … even if they aren’t.
From our point of view though, touch is about pleasure. We want to focus on how touch can stimulate the pleasure centers in our brain. Touch of this type has been described as “hedonistic.” Hedonism is a theory in psychology that people always act in such a way as to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Hey, why not?
Pleasurable touching can release a molecule called oxytocin. This “love hormone” enters the bloodstream, particularly during sexual stimulation. Certain cells, such as those in the ovaries and the testes, are major producers of oxytocin. Secretion of this wonderful substance is regulated by the electrical activity in the base of the brain … often triggered by, you guessed it, hedonistic touch.
One beautiful thing about oxytocin is that once it has been made, it tends to increase pleasure, thereby setting up a positive feedback loop that makes touch more and more pleasurable. The natural outcome of this loop, in a sensual situation, can be orgasm. After that, oxytocin levels in the blood tend to subside.
Where does CBD come into this story? Well, it turns out that CBD stimulates the same part of the brain that releases oxytocin. A study published just last year from psychologists at Northeastern University used MRI to show this.
So there seems to be a clear link between oxytocin and CBD. Find out for yourself. BluWav CBD balm was created with the love connection in mind. Open up a little blue jar of our luxurious CBD and be hedonistic, if only for the evening.
